Golf Course Maintenance Schedule
We began aerating fairways and tees Tuesday, March 24th. Greens will be aerated Tuesday, March 31st.
Why Aerate The Golf Course?
The greens must be aerated to break up the thatch layer. Each time the greens are aerated approximately 5% of the area of the green is removed. This area is replaced with sand to allow water and air to percolate down to the root system. Without aerating the thatch layer and compaction from foot traffic would seal off the root system causing the plant to not develop and die.
The fairways and tees need to be aerated for similar reasons as the greens. The fairways fight compaction from the heavy cart traffic. The tees struggle from the heavy foot traffic from golfers. If you want to see an example of how foot traffic affects the tees notice the tee box on hole #8. The tee box is worn considerably on the left side of the tee closest to the cart path. The right side is in good condition.
